Introduction

Industrial Engineering is an engineering discipline deciding the most effective methods for the utilization of basic factors of goods and service (human, machine, energy and money) production of an organization. Industrial Engineering differs from other engineering disciplines in terms of its wider perspective. Contrary to other engineers who only deal with products and processes, Industrial Engineers are in contact with people and business organizations. Below are given some of the fields that industrial engineers cope with:

  • Developing various applications for new process, automation and control technology,
  • Designing facilities, management systems and processes,
  • Developing productivity applying technology and human factors,
  • Planning and allocating limited sources,
  • Designing and setting up management information systems,
  • Selecting correct tools and equipment, processes and methods to conduct a duty,
  • Developing performance standards, job evaluation, salary and wage programs,
  • Enhancing the quality of working environments,
  • Evaluating reliability and quality performance,
  • Developing management control systems supported with financial planning and cost analysis.

 

Industrial Engineering has the widest field of work among all engineering branches. Industrial Engineers may work in a diverse range of organizations from factories to hospitals, from airway or insurance companies to banks and from various government agencies to touristic facilities.

The Department of Industrial Engineering, Atilim University was founded in 1998. It is one of the first two departments of the Faculty of Engineering. The Department of Industrial Engineering is one of the leading departments in Turkey and continues to make enormous effort to be one of the leading departments in Turkey and a strong department in international level.

The Department of Industrial Engineering has developed a strong and dynamic undergraduate program. The concept of ‘Dynamic Undergraduate Program’ is used to indicate that courses, course contents and/or teaching methods of courses can be redesigned and developed according to the changing technological and professional necessities. One of the objectives of the department is to concentrate on engineering design and create a relation between courses from the beginning of freshman year. Global competition and information technology boom changing the operation of organizations require engineers who are both equipped with technical abilities and responsive to communication, teamwork and corporate, economic, social and environmental incidents. In order to equip students with abovementioned qualifications, assignments team projects, written and oral presentations and similar applications are preferred. The Department of Industrial Engineering embodies physics and chemistry laboratories, Computer Aided Design (CAD) Laboratories, Ergonomics Laboratory, Manufacturing Laboratory, Management Information Systems Engineering Laboratory and a large number of computer laboratories.

Research is an indispensable activity in the Department of Industrial Engineering aiming to conduct research in accordance with national and international standards. Industrial Engineering cannot be regarded only as a theoretical application independent from industrial and service applications. Therefore, research philosophy of the Department is to integrate theory and practice and utilize research results in order to create solutions for industrial problems.

 

What is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial engineering is a discipline concerned with the design, improvement and the installation of the systems to organize the basic resources – people, materials, equipment, energy and information – for the production of goods and services.

What do Industrial Engineers do?
Industrial Engineers utilize their knowledge and skills gained in basic sciences, humanities and social sciences in order to analyze, design, develop, control and evaluate goods and services systems. Some contributions of Industrial Engineers to your business processes are listed as follows:

Where do Industrial Engineers work?
The term “industry” actually applies to “any organization”. Industrial engineering gives the graduates the opportunity to work in all kinds of business, from manufacturing companies to service industries, and municipal and government organizations. Some sample projects of IE’s are as follows:

  • Designing patient admission process of a hospital,
  • Conducting business and time studies,
  • Performing production planning activities of a manufacturing firm,
  • Developing layout of shipyard or ship repair and maintenance unit,
  • Simulation modelling,
  • Representing a company in the design and construction of a new manufacturing factory,

Developing a new method to avoid injuries during the assembly of a product.
