UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The first two years of the undergraduate curriculum introduce the basic tools required in later years. The first year includes courses in basic sciences, that is mathematics, physics and chemistry; and courses on computer utilisation and programming, which provide students with a broad scientific and engineering base.  These courses are accompanied by language courses, namely Turkish and English. While an introductory course on Industrial Engineering presents the fundamentals of the profession, another course on Engineering presents the engineering design concept that is expanded in the following years. Mathematical sciences continue to be introduced in the second year and are accompanied by engineering and social science courses as well as courses such as probability and statistics, cost analysis, which are tailored to meet the needs of industrial engineers.

In the third and fourth years, the students are introduced to industrial engineering topics such as production planning and control, supply chain management, quality management, operations research, ergonomics and information management. Through technical electives, students are able to specialise in areas such as database management, operations research and production management. Non-technical electives in the social sciences and humanities provide the students with an opportunity to learn other disciplines and to understand non-technical forces and issues that affect engineering decisions. Summer practices that are held at the end of the second and the third years provide the chance of observing industry practice and taking part in applications. During the fourth year, students experience a major design work through a systems analysis and design course, which is based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course-work.

The graduates of Atilim University Industrial Engineering Department will have major experience gained throughout their undergraduate studies in the following ways.

1. Engineering Design Experience

Design is an indispensable activity in engineering profession. Engineering design requires special skills such as creativity, systems thinking, decision-making and synthesis of knowledge, as well as a strong background in related subjects of science and engineering. Keeping this fact in mind, our department has developed a curriculum, which emphasizes design aspects in various courses from freshman to senior level.

The first year course "Introduction to Engineering" aims at introducing freshman students the engineering profession and a beginning design and teamwork experience. In this course, students are given a design project in which they are required to design and manufacture a physical object/structure. Students work as teams and apply the engineering design principles which they learn during lecture hours. Each team prepares a design report and makes an oral presentation for the progress of their design. At the end of the semester, a competition is held to evaluate each design based on the design criteria stated in the project description.

The engineering design concept is expanded in the second and third years of the curriculum through case studies and/or projects given in various courses such as Engineering Drawing, Ergonomics, Facilities Planning, Production Planning and Control, and Management Information Systems.

The culmination of the design experience in our curriculum is the Industrial Engineering Design I and II. The projects are completed by design teams of three or four students working on a real-life problem in an off-campus organization. Students may be in contact with the specialists of the organization from other disciplines, depending on the problem that has been defined.

2. Oral and Written Communication

Our students develop strong oral and written communication skills through the courses they take in the fields of Humanities, Basic Sciences, and Engineering. These skills are gained by preparing lab reports, term papers, project reports, oral presentations, case studies, summer practice reports as well as participating in class discussions and interpreting readings, all under the supervision of the faculty.

3. Computer Experience

Extensive computer usage is required throughout the undergraduate program. The students gain computer experience in applications like statistical software, mathematical model solvers, spreadsheet, programming languages, computer-aided design software, simulation software, and the Internet.

4. Laboratory Experience

Most of our undergraduate courses require laboratory work, including basic science experiments, engineering drawing practices, data gathering, factory visits, manufacturing process practices, experiments and measurements in ergonomics, layout design and development and real-life applications of problem solving.
